Huddersfield
began their 2006 season with a nail biting, last over, victory against Sheffield
at Micklehurst on Sunday. Huddersfield won the toss and decided to put the
visitors in to bat, and at 121 for 1 with Yorkshire Academy players Welsh and
Sanderson in full flight, it looked like a big mistake. The introduction of
Greg Buckley (4 for 52), who was well supported by Chris Matthewman, Ben Raven-Hill
and Sam Scott curtailed the run rate, and Huddersfield methodically bowled Sheffield
out for 200 in the 47th over. The
opening Sheffield attack bowled a good line and length, and Huddersfield had to
battle for every run. They lost Greg Buckley, Tom Denton and Liam Morris and
at 62 for 3 after 22 overs, particularly against county spinner Welsh, they were
struggling to take control of the game. Raven-Hill remained resolute at one
end scoring a creditable 49, but the game changed with the introduction of Thurstonland’s
Jack Oldham, an opening batsman for his club, and playing his first Joe Lumb game,
Oldham, produced a master class in controlled stroke play. He was Mr Cool
taking every ball on it’s own merit, playing shots all around the ground and under
intense pressure, appeared to take it all in his stride, and was well supported
by the bubbly wicketkeeper Robin Lambert, a natural stroke maker, who contributed
a valuable 30 in 40 balls. Lambert and Oldham contributed a match winning
stand of 78, but when Lambert was out at 175, Huddersfield still had a lot to
do. Enter debutant Chris Matthewman from Green Moor, another cool and responsible
cricketer, who also appeared to take the pressure in his stride. Matthewman
showed a maturity beyond his years, and he and Oldham took Huddersfield to a victory
over a good Sheffield side, with Matthewman scoring the winning four with two
balls left. Huddersfield
has an experienced and competent team and will be hard to beat this season. They
bat all down the order, all the players bowl and there is intense competition
for places. This was a good team performance with a man of the match performance
from Jack Oldham. The
next game is against Craven (Skipton area) at Shepley on Sunday 28 May. |
