Huddersfield
continued their fixtures against a strong North Yorkshire side in a must win game,
and won the toss and decided to bat. Tom
Denton and Ben Raven Hill opened with a stand of 57 in 10 overs with Shepley’s
Tom Denton contributing 47 majestic runs. Denton grows in stature every week
and impressed with a master class of shots all around the wicket, but Raven
Hill and Morris soon followed Denton to the pavilion, to bring Chris Matthewman
(65) and Jack Oldham (46) together, who put on an interesting batting display,
posting a match winning 20 over stand of 110 for the 4th wicket. In their
first 10 overs together, they were bogged down by the spinners and contributed
only 20 runs, but after a drinks break they scored 90 runs in the following 10
overs. They are both correct batsmen who play every ball on its own merit,
and this was a lesson for all cricketers in taking one ball at a time. Both
Matthewman and Oldham have matured with every game, and have played a significant
part in all the games this season. The last 10 overs of the Huddersfield innings
produced a run out gala and Huddersfield were dismissed in the final over with
a creditable 229 on the board. From
the start of the North Yorkshire innings, the Clayton West trio of Sam Scott,
Nick Sharpe and Jonny Butterfield gave the North Yorkshire batsmen a torrid time
by bowling a good line and length, swinging and moving the ball in all directions.
Backed up by some good fielding, North Yorkshire were reeling at 76 for 7
after 19 overs, and an early return down the A1 looked imminent, but with Huddersfield
in total control the players suddenly looked drained by the heat. They were
lethargic and tired, which allowed North Yorkshire’s lower order to get them back
in the game. Huddersfield dug deep and dismissed North Yorkshire for 174,
winning a hard earned victory. Huddersfield
continue to play as a team, and all players bring something different to the game.
They play well for each other, have an excellent captain in Ben Raven-Hill,
who must have been delighted with the all round team performance, with every player
contributing to the victory. The
man of the match was Sam Scott, who bowls a good line, expects to get a wicket
every bowl and bowls with a passion, and his bowling display throughout this game
was impressive, in dismissing both Yorkshire Academy players, Clarkson in his
first over and Allinson, when he returned for his second spell, but he was very
well supported by Sharpe and Butterfield. Huddersfield’s
next game is against Craven (Skipton area) at Shepley on Sunday 25 June, 1-30
start. |
